Successful businessman and philanthropist of Baltimore, Md., Jonas S. Friedenwald (1803-1893) decided that he wanted to use his newly acquired wealth to benefit the Jewish community. A son of German immigrant parents, Aaron Friedenwald was born in Baltimore. He studied medicine at the University of Maryland from 1858 to 1860. He continued his education at medical schools in Paris, Vienna, and Berlin from 1860 to 1862. He returned to Baltimore and opened a general practice, specializing in ophthalmology.
